Tour de Kepri has it all - Exciting Racing, Tough Stages, Scenic Beauty and a Great Atmosphere.

___________

28-30 Sept 2018

Tour de Kepri 28-30 SeptemberIn 2018 Cycosports is launching the Tour de Kepri, a fantastic 3 Stage Tour that we know will become a feature on the Asia amateur racing calendar.

Combining race courses that many in the region know well, the Tour de Kepri promises to provide exciting racing and hospitality throughout.
The tour is an age-category tour with an additional catch-all 'Sports Category" for those new to racing or not so serious - ie the traditional Cat 3 of Cycosports.

In addition, there is a Gran Fondo for those who want to enjoy the ride at their own pace.

The Tour kicks off on Friday afternoon with a criterium located in the new government sector of Tanjung Pinang called Dompak. The streets are new and wide so some exciting fast-paced racing is expected.

On Saturday morning the riders will head across Bintan riding some 135km (1250m of elevation) to finish at Tanjong Uban. Here the riders can relax, enjoy lunch and then board the RORO ferry for Batam. Once we arrive in Batam, riders and bikes will be transferred to the hotel at Batam Centre.

With Sunday as the big day - The Classic Barelang (aka Batam Six Bridges) will come into its own, deciding the final categorization of both the GC's and the Teams.

In all, we have 300km of racing across the islands of Kepri. While this is the first year for the Tour, the main components of the race have been tried and tested over many years.
We are all looking forward to an exciting 3 stages of racing.

SPECIAL EARLY BIRD PACKAGES

We are pleased to provide an amazing early bird package (limited to the first 150 registrations) where your Tour Hotel (twin share) accommodation and ferries will be sponsored. This package is open to all individuals living outside of Indonesia. The hotels for this event are of excellent quality and have modern facilities.

Stage 1: Dompak

Dual Crits on nice new roads - fast paced with a kicker of a hill that is sure to push the Pelotons

___________

Stage I

Friday 28 Sept

Stage I: Dompak Criterium

Tanjung Pinang Criterium

On arrival at Tanjung Pinang at 3pm (Indonesian time), riders will disembark and proceed through customs, walking across the road to the Governor's Residence.

Here, riders can set up their bikes and prepare their small bag to take with them to the Criterium. Their "tagged" large bag will be loaded on the truck and checked into the riders room ready for them after the criterium. Once the riders are ready, the group will be escorted to Dompak via the scenic coastal road.

The escort is approximately 8km and allows all riders to warm up as well as check their bike over.

Kepri-Stage1

Once at Dompak, riders can deposit their small bags and prepare for their criteriums. We will be running two criteriums simultaneously on parallel courses divided by a median strip. This allows us to half the time need to run Stage 1 and ensures everyone gets to the hotel at a decent hour.

The criterium courses are on new government roads and have large sweeping corners, ideal for safe racing. Both courses do have a small "kicker" of a hill which will test the pelotons.

We are aiming for 40-minute criteriums with 3 laps added for the finish. Each crit will be counted down from 3 laps and will have a bell on the last lap.
Riders will be allowed to utilise the 1 Lap puncture / mechanical for the criterium.

We expect racing to be completed by 5:30pm. Riders will then form a Peloton that will be escorted back to the CK Hotel by Police front and rear. Bikes will be deposited at a special secure holding area at the hotel.

At the CK Hotel, we are aiming to have all riders already checked in, large bags in the room and keys ready for the riders. A light supper will be available for riders and a quick prize giving for the Criterium winners.

Massages are also available at a special tour rate.

Stage 2: Bintan

A stage where the landscape is familiar with many in the region. A stage with beautiful, yet demanding, terrain.

___________

Stage 2

Saturday 29 Sept

Stage 2: Bintan

Bintan

Saturday morning starts with an early breakfast at the hotel. All riders will be requested to deposit their large bag at reception. To facilitate an early start, we will have a "mass checkout" meaning we will chase people during the RORO for any extras charged to their room.

Flag-off will be at 7am from the Hotel. Racing will start shortly after the 5km neutralised escort out of the city. Riders will then head north to Batu Sembilan before heading east along the Jalan Raya Kewel to the east coast of Bintan, where the pelotons will enjoy the flat coastal road for 15km.

The tour then turns left (west) and takes on the legendary "Red Road to Hell" before heading around the Tembeling area. There is essentially 40km of undulating/demanding roads before the tour settles down to a nice run into the finish a few kilometres outside of Tanjung Uban.

At the finish, riders can enjoy a cool drink before being escorted in groups to the lunch area at Tanjung Uban Ferry Terminal.

While lunch is on, bikes will be loaded on racks to the RORO (Roll On Roll Off Ferry).

Once everyone has finished lunch and prize giving is over, it's time for a relaxing hour on the RORO (Roll On Roll Off ferry). It's a slow trip, but comfy seats and complimentary leg massages and teh tarik make it easy to unwind.

On arrival in Batam, riders will take the chartered buses to the hotel at Batam Centre where their large bags will have been checked in already and room keys ready at the reception.

Saturday night is "free and easy"

Stage 3: Barelang

The iconic stage and a classic on the calendar - Barelang (aka Six Bridges) will test all the GC contenders and teams.

___________

Stage 3

Sunday 30 Sept

Stage 3: Barelang Classic

If you would like to just race the one-day event please click here

Barelang

It's the final day of the tour and what a way to finish.

The Barelang stage will be 125km in length with 1000m plus elevation.*

While on paper it doesn't look out of the ordinary, the reality is somewhat different.

The course covers the entire length of Batam traversing the six bridges down to the turn and then back again. The "kicker" in the past six years of running this race has been the wind at the turn and it's normally the place the pelotons are stretched to their limit.

Kepri-Stage4

Barelang is always exciting and most years has seen solo breakaways in the last kilometres. It's a test of teamwork and making the correct call on the decisive breaks.

The iconic finish on the Barelang bridge provides a fitting climax to the tour, after which riders have a simple roll down to the Barelang Seafood Resturant for the prize giving.

The Sunday Prize Giving will include the prizes for the Barelang stage as well as the overall GC for Individuals and teams.

After the prize giving it's time to say goodbye to Kepri and head back to Singapore and beyond.

Gran Fondo

The Gran Fondo Two Stage Tour

If you would like to just ride the one day Barelang Classic Gran Fondo, please click here

Kepri Grand Fondo

For those who would like to simply have a great weekend of riding the Kepri Islands of Bintan and Batam, we have the two day Grand Fondo.

GF riders will come into Tanjung Pingang on the Friday (afternoon or evening ferry). They will head to the Governor's Residence across the road from the terminal where waiting buses and trucks will transport them and their bikes to the Hotel.

Once at the hotel GF riders are more than welcome to join the prize giving of the racing categories and enjoy a light supper provided.

Saturday - Bintan Classic

The GF riders will leave after the race pelotons have departed, providing sufficient gap. GF riders will have support vehicles as well as an Ambulance and Sweeper truck following. Three water stops will be set up for the GF riders.
The total distance for this stage is 135km but we are toying with the idea of a "shortcut" that takes off 20km of hills for the GF riders.
Lunch will be provided at T Ubin and a second RORO will take you to Batam where buses and trucks will then take you to the hotel.

Sunday - Barelang Classic

On Sunday the flag-off for GF Riders will be around 8:30am with the day-tripper Gran Fondo riders joining at Batam Centre. You will need to check out early as your bags will be transported and held (in a locked truck) at the Sekupang Terminal.

After the flag-off, there will be a front escort through town, but remember these are open roads and GF riders are not racing.
The course for Sunday is 125km with the finish on the iconic Barelang Bridge. During the event, there will be support vehicles as well as an ambulance and sweeper truck following. Three water stops will be on the course also.

Once you have finsihed, GF riders will proceed to Barelang seafood for lunch. The showers are limited, so wet wipes could be an option if you want to remain friends with your teammates.

On completion of lunch, you will head to Sekupang Ferry Terminal for boarding. Your bikes are transported to the terminal during your lunch.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the frequently asked questions related to the Tour de Kepri.

Tour de Kepri

(Q) So it's now a 3 Day / 3 Stage event?

(A) Yes based on feedback from the community it was felt a 3 day race starting on Friday afternoon made more sense.

(Q) I signed up for the 4 Day event and the old pricing. What happens now?
(A) We will automatically refund you the difference on the new early bird rate. You will also receive an email from us highlighting the change.

(Q) Your Early Bird Pricing Seems Incredible?

A) It is! Kepri Tourism Board is sponsoring early bird entries with free twin share accommodation giving people the opportunity to enter the tour at an unbelievable price. Rest assured the hotels are great and of a very high quality.

(Q) When does the Early Bird pricing end?
A) We have limited slots available at the special pricing so once these are full, the normal pricing will kick in.

(Q) My wife / husband / friend would like to come along and watch. Is this possible?
A) Unfortunately, it's not practical as the start and finish of each stage in different and the logistics of moving spectators is not within our means.

(Q) What is the Refund Policy on Your Events?
(A) Please see our refund policy here. Please note there is no refund early bird rates. Transfers are allowed on early bird rates but will be at the prevailing public price as at the date of the transfer request via email.

(Q) How will I be Briefed on the Event?
(A) Cycosports publishes a briefing Document approximately 10 days before the event. Please check the event details on the website for updates. It will also be announced on Facebook.

Ferry Transport

(Q) I see for the tour you leave Singapore from Tanah Merah and return via Harbour Front. Is this correct?
(A) Yes as ferries from Sekupang only goto Harbour Front. Sekupang was chosen as the return port as it's less crowded than Batam Centre and has better facilities. Also leaving your car at Tanah Merah for 3 days will be more expensive than taking taxis.

(Q) I'd like to take different ferries which I book myself. Can I get a refund on the Cycosports Ferries?
(A) Afraid not as we have special agreements in place with the respective parties supporting the tour.

(Q) Should I bring a Bike Bag to protect my bike during transport?
(A) We would recommend not to unless travelling in from overseas. We do protect bikes during transport with blankets.

(Q) I understand you are using FastTrack Immigration. How does this work?
A) You will pass your passport (with the Cycosports sticker on the front) to the immigration officers. They will then process them in bulk and return them to us later. The process speeds up immigration.

(Q) Why are you not returning via Batam Centre?
A) Batam Centre can experience long waiting periods. The Sekupang terminal is better suited for bicycle loading and expediting chartered ferries.

Accommodation

(Q) Can I have a room for myself?
A) Yes you can but you will need to pay an additional $50 per night's stay.

(Q) I will twin share - how do I pick my roommate?
A) As part of registration, please state your friend's name that you are twin sharing with. Notte - You need to chase your friend to ensure they sign up (especially if they want the early bird rate). If they are slow they will be charged the normal rate.

(Q) Can I take my bicycle to my room?

A) We do not encourage this as we have set up special "secure" areas for the bikes. You will only be able to remove your bike from the holding area if you have the matching bib tag.

(Q) How does the Express Checkout Work?
A) We will allow everyone to check out together and will do a master bill. Later in the day, we will chase you for the monies (in Rupiah). Please note that you will not be able to dispute the payment with Cycosports as we are simply collecting the amount owing. Ideally, if you can settle your own bill the night before it will make it easier for everyone and avoids any disputes.

(Q) We check out very early from the hotels. When will I see my large bag again?

A) Your large bag will be waiting for you at the Batam hotel (Saturday) and Sekupang Ferry Terminal (Sunday) within a special holding area.

Food & Beverage

(Q) What's Included as far as Food Goes?
A) Breakfast is included with the hotel accommodation. Supper is included for Friday night. Lunch is included for Saturday and Sunday. Any beverages / beer or room service is an additional extra payable by the individual.

Racing

(Q) Is this event governed by UCI rules?
A) No this event will reference (most) UCI rules but is an amateur sporting event.

(Q) What happens if I have a mechanical in the Criterium?
A) Under normal criterium rules you are afforded one lap to head to the mechanic zone and make repairs or change wheels

(Q) Are you supporting disc brake wheels?

A) No not at this stage. If you are using Disc Brake Wheels We suggest you use tire sealant or bring sealant / spare tube with you.

(Q) I'd like to race but I'm not keen on Criteriums
(A) That's ok - you have a couple of options. First please do check out the criterium course - especially for the Category 3 riders as it's a longer course that is more suited to those who have not done much criterium racing. An alternative option is to "skip" the criterium and just do the stages. While you allow this, you will not be in contention

(Q) What happens if I DNS / DNF a stage - can I still race the next day?
(A) Absolutely - you just will not get a Tour placing, but you can still contribute to your team's tour result.

(Q) What type of bike can I use?
(A) For the race categories, we follow the UCI standard for road race bikes (except weight will not be tested). We also allow disc-brake wheels but there is no race support for these.

(Q) How Big Can My Race Team Be?
(A) In the spirit of competitive racing, we limit the team size to 8 per category. You can submit one or more teams per category. For example, if you had 10 riders, you could submit a team of say 6 and 4. These would be classed as Team A and Team B within the category and from the perspective of points for the team trophies.

(Q) How is the Team Trophy Awarded
(A) For each stage, the top three(3) times of the team are added together. The total of the  3 stages are then added together for the team for a final placing. Note - members can have a DNS/DNF on one or more stages but still contribute to the team time. Note - Team Trophies are for Men's Open, Men's Masters and Men's Supermasters Only.

(Q) Is it fair that someone can just race the Barelang Classic? They will have fresh legs!A) Those coming only to race the Barelang classic will only be competing for the stage trophy and their individual time will not contribute to the team result for the team tour placings. Yes, they can help their team members who are in the tour as can your one-day team members.

(Q) Why are you making individuals who wish to race the one-day Barelang Classic come over on the Saturday and stay the night?
A) We are aiming to start the 3rd day's racing early as it will provide quieter roads as well as provide a great gap between the racing pelotons and the gran fondo riders later in the day.

Gran Fondo

(Q) Are the gran fondo riders timed?
A) Yes the riders will receive times for their respective stages.

(Q) Are there trophies for the gran fondo winners?
A) No as the gran fondo is meant to be a personal challenge ride, not a race.

Stage Support

(Q) What support are we provided on the stages?
A) Those racing will have Peloton Support in the form of Water and Wheel Bikes, as well as a neutral car and ambulance following each Peloton. A sweeper truck will also be behind the race pelotons and the last gran fondo rider.

(Q) Will there be medical support?
(A) Yes we have both local medical teams but cyclist are responsible for their own medical insurance in the case of serious injuries.

Other Questions

(Q) How do I get an answer for other questions I may have?

A) Please submit any questions you may have here
