Tour of Phuket

Following on from 2016/2017, the third edition of the Tour of Phuket promises to be even better. The event has two options - a 3 stage tour starting with a prologue TT or a 2 stage non-competitive Gran Fondo. This year the event home-base will be at the Phuket Gateway, enabling participants to select accommodation options that best suits their style and budget.

For 2018 we are moving to age-based categories for the competitive 3 stage tour. There is a 3 stage Sports Category (19yrs +) aimed at the traditional Cat 3 riders who may not have the power/stamina to race in their age category*. The 2 stage gran fondo is a non-competitive category with finisher medals.

* Sand Baggers in the Sports Category may be asked to move to their age category if their TT results are impressive and deserving of a spot in their respective age category.

Tour de Phuket 2017

Tour of Phuket

9-11 March 2018

This year the course willl move further north to reduce the time on main roads. We are currently reviewing serval course routes and will post up the final routes soon.

For those racing, the Tour of Phuket kicks off with an Individual Time Trial on the Friday afternoon.

On Saturday both Tour and Gran Fondo riders will take on the main stage (140km) that heads north to the Thailand mainland.

Then, Sunday the tour will come to a finale with the challenging (96km) stage that includes some tough KOM opportunities.

We are extremely excited about the new course. We took on the feedback of last year and have look for roads that are safer and even more scenic. It will be a wonderful weekend of cycling.

Distance: 5.3km

Tour of Phuket 2017 - Stage 1

For those racing in the tour, the action kicks off with a Prologue Time Trial of 5.3km.

The prologue will start at a newly developed park near the mainland bridge. The park will serve as the holding area for cyclists, providing some shelter as well as the advantage of being able to see the riders pass at the 3/4 mark.

Riders will be racing against the clock on a very smooth / fast road which has some minor elevations. The road is for most of the event, a dedicated cycling path, increasing safety and providing a great riding surface.

The course is a simple, 5.3km loop with a couple of technical turns at the start and finish.

Once your TT is complete, you relax, unwind and watch others compete, or simply return to your hotel in your own time.

There is off-road parking for those coming by car, but extreme caution must be exercised as cyclists are warming up / racing.

Please Note: Clip-on TT bars and TT / Aero helmets are ok. TT Bikes and Disc Wheels are not allowed.

Stage 2 : Phang Nga BeautyTour of Phuket 2017 - Stage 2

Saturday 10th March (7:30am)

Strava Profile - TDP Day 2

Distance: 141km

This will be the longest stage of approximately 142km heading north into some very scenic Thai countryside.

While the stage does utilise the main road for a fraction of the race, it is very safe with two lanes both ways and a very wide shoulder.

The northern part of the course follows the coast and then heads inland where the undulations will start to test the legs. At around 70km the first KOM of the tour will be fought, before riders head south again. A second KOM is at the 110km mark. Although smaller the legs will be hurting by this stage so it may prove to be a breakaway spot.

After a short stint on the main road again, the route will drop down to a quieter road and the ultimate finish line.

The stage will feature some challenging sections that will test your teamwork and resolve to win.

Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons. There will be two static water stops to refill the bottles and take a break. Tired Gran Fondo riders can skip the loop at the top of the stage if they wish and will be tagged as completing the shorter course. All GF riders will receive a finishers medal providing the finish both Saturday (regardless of short or long loop) and Sunday stages.

Stage 3: The FinaleTour de Phuket Stage III

Sunday 11th March - 7:30am

Double Phang Nga Peninsula Loop - 97km

Strava Profile - TDP Day 3

The 3rd stage brings into play part of last year's course - a beautiful ride through a very scenic area that includes views of James Bond bay. So beautiful, we will do it twice.

The new course will test rider's tired muscles and provide ample opportunities for breakaways.

We expect the race to be wide open leading into the final stage, with plenty of attacks anticipated. There will be two KOM's for the Tour Riders.

Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons.

There will be two water stops for the Gran Fondo riders. Tired GF riders can decide to do one lap if they wish, however, they will not be in top 3 medal draw and their results will reflect a loop missed.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Tour Travel & Accommodation

Q: Can I fly in early or leave later?

A: Absolutely, your in charge of youre flights so just book what works for you, but be sure to arrive early at the Phuket Gateway ready for your start times.

Q: Where should I Stay?

A:  The simple answer is "wherever you like" but try to select a hotel at the northern end of Phuket as all starts and finishes are at the Phuket Gateway located at the northern tip of the Island of Phuket.

Q: Why is there no "Tour Hotel" this year?

A:  Most hotels do not want to be completely booked out by cyclists only staying 2 nights. By not having a tour hotel, participants are free to select the accommodation that suits their budget, location and style preferences.

Q: Can I bring Family?

A: Yes of course - that's why we recommend selecting your own accommodation. We will recommend family friendly hotels on the accommodation page also.

Q: Are you arranging airport transfers?

A: No - please arrange these with your hotel or hire a car.

Q: What time do I have to be at the Phuket Gateway for the start of my event?

A: The Tour Prologue will start at 2 pm on Friday 9th March, while the Gran Fondo will start at 8 am on Saturday 10th March. You should be at the Phuket Gateway (ready to ride out) at least an hour before.

Q: Do I need travel / medical insurance to race?

A: We would strongly encourage it! Please note that Singapore cyclists who have a SCF licence and SCF Insurance are covered for international events like the Tour de Phuket.

Q: Can I cancel my race booking once entered?

A: No but you can transfer it to a friend for an admin fee of $50 (race entry only) before the 1st of March 2018.

Race Questions

Q: Do I need an SCF or UCI licence to compete?

A: If you are from Singapore and wish for your results to be included within the Singapore Cycling Federation's National Points Contest, then yes, you need a SCF licence.

Q: If I reside in Singapore, where can I purchase the SCF licence?

A: The licence is only $85 and includes training and race insurance for those residing in Singapore. For full details of the licence and insurance coverage click here.

Q: Do you have medics on hand in case of emergency?

A: Yes we have a full medical team stationed at the event and ambulances on standby. We will also have Singapore evac procedures defined and ready.

Q: Why did Cycosports go with age group categories?

A: We get a lot of feedback from those who enter the races and the majority are looking for age group categories. Age grouping also stops "sand baggers". We have however included a "catch all" sports category that is still competitive but open to any age. This is meant for first-time racers or those with higher BMI's.

Q: Will you have the usual Cycosports Wheel and Water Bike Support?

A: Yes for all three categories of the tour. However if you are doing the Gran Fondo, you'll need to bring your own spare tube and pick up water at the two static water stops setup for each day.

Q: Once entered, can I change my race category?

A: Yes up until 1 March you can change your race category providing slots are still available. There is no charge for changing your category unless you are upgrading from the Gran Fondo to the Tour.

Q: Will there be race prizes?

A: Yes there will be daily prizes for the top 3 in each tour category, plus yellow jerseys for the for tour leaders to be worn on the next stage. Tour winners will receive a tour trophy at the final prize giving on Sunday. We are also looking at prizes / prize money but this will depend on whether we can garner any sponsors for these.

Q: Is there a special tour dinner on Saturday night?

A: We are still debating this one as many feel they would like to do their own thing in Phuket with such great food everywhere around.

Q: What time will everything end on Sunday?

A: We are aiming to have everyone back at the hotel and prize giving completed by 1pm.

Q: I have a question that is not covered here?

A: Great - please use the Contact Us form and we can respond.

Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)

Please read the questions carefully and answer honestly.

Yes/No

1.    Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition and that you should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor?

Yes/No

2.    Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?

Yes/No

3.    In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing physical activity?

Yes/No

4.    Do you lose your balance because of dizziness or do you ever lose consciousness?

Yes/No

5.    Do you have a bone or joint problem (for example, back, knee or hip) that could be made worse by a change in your physical activity?

Yes/No

6.    Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs (for example, water pills) for your blood pressure or heart condition?

Yes/No

7.    Do you know of any other reason why you should not do physical activity?

Yes/No

If you answered YES to one or more questions:

Consult your doctor by phone or in person BEFORE you start becoming much more physically active or BEFORE you have a fitness appraisal. Tell your doctor about the PAR-Q and which question you answered YES.

  • You may be able to do an activity you want – as long as you start slow and build up gradually. Or you may need to restrict your activities to those which are safe for you. Consults your doctor about the kinds of activities you wish to participate in and follow his/her advice.
  • Find out which community programmes are safe and helpful for you.

If you answered NO honestly to all PAR-Q questions, you can be reasonably sure to:

  • Start becoming much more physically active. Starting slowly and building up gradually is the safest and easiest way to go.
  • Take part in a fitness appraisal. This is excellent for determining your basic fitness so as to plan the best way to live actively. Evaluating your blood pressure is also strongly recommended. For readings above 144/94, consult your doctor before you become more physically active.

Delay becoming much more active:

  • If you are not feeling well because of a temporary illness such as a cold or a fever – wait until you feel better, or
  • If you are or may be pregnant – consult your doctor before you start becoming more active.
