The Tour de Phuket
The Tour de Phuket is set to make a big impact on the 2017 amateur calendar. The event has two options - a 3 stage tour starting with a prologue TT or a 2 stage gran fondo. The event is based at the Grand West Sands Resort in Mai Khao, a fantastic hotel right on the beach and great for all the family. This year will have moved the event north of the airport to provide greater access to new routes and to provide more accommodation hotel choices.
Tour Categories
The tour will have 3 Pelotons being Cat 1,2, and 3. Each category is open to male and female, however there will only be a prize category for women in Cat 3.
Individuals will be allowed to change categories up until two weeks before the tour. The race orgnasiers will also review each entries past performance and strava record to ensure they are in the correct category.
For satefy, tour categories will be capped, so be sure to register early.
Tour de Phuket
17-19 March 2017
This year the course willl move further north to reduce the time on main roads. We are currently reviewing serval course routes and will post up the final routes soon.
For those racing, the Tour de Phuket kicks off with an Individual Time Trial on the Friday afternoon.
On Saturday both Tour and Gran Fondo riders will take on the main stage (140km) that heads north to the Thailand mainland.
Then, Sunday the tour will come to a finale with the challenging (96km) stage that includes some tough KOM opportunities.
We are extremely excited about the new course. We took on the feedback of last year and have look for roads that are safer and even more scenic. It will be a wonderful weekend of cycling.
Stage 1 : Individual Time Trial - Prologue
Friday 17th March - 2pm
Strava Profile - TDP Day 1
Distance: 5.3km
For those racing in the tour, the action kicks off with a Prologue Time Trial of 5.3km.
The prologue will start at a newly developed park near the mainland bridge. The park will serve as the holding area for cyclists, providing some shelter as well as the advantage of being able to see the riders pass at the 3/4 mark.
Riders will be racing against the clock on a very smooth / fast road which has some minor elevations. The road is for most of the event, a dedicated cycling path, increasing safety and providing a great riding surface.
The course is a simple, 5.3km loop with a couple of technical turns at the start and finish.
Once your TT is complete, you relax, unwind and watch others compete, or simply return to your hotel in your own time.
There is off-road parking for those coming by car, but extreme caution must be exercised as cyclists are warming up / racing.
Please Note: Clip on TT bars and TT / Aero helmets are ok. TT Bikes and Disc Wheels are not allowed.
Stage 2 : Phang Nga Beauty
Saturday 18th March (7:30am)
Strava Profile - TDP Day 2
Distance: 141km
This will be the longest stage of approximately 142km heading north into some very scenic Thai countryside.
While the stage does utilise the main road for a fraction of the race, it is very safe with two lanes both ways and a very wide shoulder.
The northern part of the course follows the coast and then heads inland where the undulations will start to test the legs. At around 70km the first KOM of the tour will be fought, before riders head south again. A second KOM is at the 110km mark. Although smaller the legs will be hurting by this stage so it may prove to be a breakaway spot.
After a short stint on the main road again, the route will drop down to a quieter road and the ultimate finish line.
The stage will feature some challenging sections that will test your teamwork and resolve to win.
Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons. There will be two static water stops to refill the bottles and take a break. Tired Gran Fondo riders can skip the loop at the top of the stage if they wish, however, they will not be included in the top 3 medal draw. Their results will also reflect loop missed.
Stage 3: The Finale
Sunday 19th March - 7:30am
Double Phang Nga Peninsula Loop - 97km
Strava Profile - TDP Day 3
The 3rd stage brings into play part of last year's course - a beautiful ride through a very scenic area that includes views of James Bond bay. So beautiful, we will do it twice.
The new course will test rider's tired muscles and provide ample opportunities for breakaways.
We expect the race to be wide open leading into the final stage, with plenty of attacks anticipated. There will be two KOM's for the Tour Riders.
Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons.
There will be two water stops for the Gran Fondo riders. Tired GF riders can decide to do one lap if they wish, however, they will not be in top 3 medal draw and their results will reflect a loop missed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tour Travel & Accommodation
Q: Can I fly in early or leave later?
A: Absolutely, your in charge of youre flights so just book what works for you, but be sure to arrive early at the Grand West Sands Resort ready for your start times.
Q: How many room slots do you have at the special rate ?
A: We have block booked a good number of rooms for early birds. If we sell through, we can always see if we can get more but the price may go up.
Q: Do I have to stay at the Grand West Sands Resort?
A: You can stay where ever you like. Grand West Sands Resort will be the "HQ" for the weekend so it's obviously the easiest place to stay and provides great facilities for cyclists and families. We have also negotiated a very good room rate for the weekend. Please try to book early as the rate may not last.
Q: Can I bring Family?
A: Yes of course - that was a deciding factor in choosing the Grand West Sands Resort - a great hotel on the beach and perfect for families also with their special family suites.
Q: Are you arranging airport transfers?
A: Yes we are trying to get a good rate for you and your bicycle. As there are so many people coming in at once, it does take some planning.
Q: What time do I have to be at the Holiday Inn for the start of my event?
A: The Tour Prologue will start at 3pm on Friday 17th March, while the Gran Fondo will start at 7am on Staurday 18th March. You should be at the Grand West Sands Resort (ready to ride out) at least an hour before.
Q: Do I need travel / medical insurance to race?
A: We would strongly encourage it! Please note that Singapore cyclists who have a SCF licence and SCF Insurance are covered for international events like the Tour de Phuket.
Q: Can I cancel my race booking once entered?
A: No but you can transfer it to a friend for an admin fee of $50 (race entry only) before the 1st of March 2017.
Race Questions
Q: Do I need an SCF or UCI licence to compete?
A: If you are from Singapore and wish for your results to be included within the Singapore Cycling Federation's National Points Contest, then yes, you need a SCF licence. If you do not wish to compete in the national points contest, you can select the Sport Category (available for Peloton 3) which does not requitre a SCF licence.
Q: If I reside in Singapore, where can I purchase the SCF licence?
A: The licence is only $85 and includes training and race insurance for those residing in Singapore. For full details of the licence and insurance coverage click here.
Q: Do you have medics on hand in case of emergency?
A: Yes we have a full medical team stationed at the event and ambulances on standby. We will also have Singapore evac procedures defined and ready.
Q: Why did Cycosports go with race categories rather than age group categories?
A: We felt race categories give a better sporting chance for the majority. It's not a great feeling to be dropped from your age category very early in a tour. We will, however be posting age group times as part of the results (as these will be used for Singapore Cycling Federation gradings).
Q: How will you ensure there are not "Sand Baggers" within race categories
A: It's always tough to police self selected categories, but we will be asking people for their Strava ID's and will review their past performances as well as community feedback. We are also looking at how we can potentially push riders up a category if they do exceptionally well in the prologue relative to the category above.
Q: Will you have the usual Cycosports Wheel and Water Bike Support?
A: Yes for all three categories of the tour. However if you are doing the Gran Fondo, you'll need to bring your own spare tube and pick up water at the two static water stops setup for each day.
Q: Once entered, can I change my race category?
A: Yes up until 14 days before the tour, you can change your race category providing slots are still available. There is no charge for changing your category unless you are upgrading from the Gran Fondo to the Tour.
Q: Will there be race prizes?
A: Yes there will be daily prizes for the top 3 in each tour category, plus yellow jerseys for the for tour leaders to be worn on the next stage. Tour winners will receive a tour trophy at the final prize giving on Sunday. We are also looking at prizes / prize money but this will depend on whether we can garner any sponsors for these.
Q: Is there a special tour dinner on Saturday night?
A: We are still debating this one as many feel they would like to do their own thing in Phuket with such great food everywhere around.
Q: What time will everything end on Sunday?
A: We are aiming to have everyone back at the hotel and prize giving completed by 1pm.
Q: I have a question that is not covered here?
A: Great - please use the Contact Us form and we can respond.
The Tour de Phuket will follow with general race rules of Cycosports Road Races, with the addition of these rules:
Individual Prologue
- Areo / TT Helmets and Clip-on TT Bars are allowed
- TT Specific bikes and solid disc wheels are not permitted
- If an individual produces a time that is faster than the top 20% of the riders in the category above, Cycosports will have the option to review the time of the individual and potentially discuss moving them up to the category above for the entire tour.
- If an individual produces a time that is slower than the bottom 20% of the category below, Cycosports will have the option to review the time of the individual and potentially discuss moving them up to the category below for the entire tour.
- If a participant punctures / has a genuine mechanical during the TT, they will be given the option to undertake the TT one more time.
Team Support
- Teams are allowed to hire their own support vehicle to supply water and wheels, however due to the small roads, the team vehicles must always remain behind the peloton. Any breakaways will be managed by the Cycosports wheel and water bikes.
- If you are using tubulars, we stronglly recommend you bring your own spare wheels.

Calculating Points - The Mechanics
Determining Age
Age is determined by the present year minus the year of birth of the competitor (i.e. 2017 minus 2000 is 17 years).
Resolving Ties
In the event of a tie in the final ranking, the rider with the greatest number of 1st places on the ranking of races in the current year shall take precedence. If there is still a tie, it will be resolved by the greatest number of 2nd places, then 3rd places etc, whatever the rider’s placing.
Only places for which SCF ranking points are allocated will be taken into consideration.
Team Ranking (Best Team and Best Singaporean Team)
The team rankings shall be obtained by adding together the points of their four (4) best placed riders in the individual rankings (across all road categories whether male or female) in the current year.
Resolving Ties
Ties between teams shall be resolved by counting up the greatest number of 1st places, 2nd places etc. This will be based on events organised/sanctioned by SCF in the current year and obtained by the team’s four (4) best riders on the individual rankings.
Determining Best Singaporean Team
The Best Singaporean team shall be obtained by adding together the points of their four (4) highest ranked Singaporean riders in the individual ranking in the current year.
Changing/Switching Teams
Riders are permitted to move and change team names during the season, however no transfer of individual rider points will be permitted to be brought forward to the new team during the season.
