Of course you are most welcome to bring the family or stay at other locations.

Tour de Phuket

18-20 March 2016

Welcome to the first Tour de Phuket. We've put together a course that is both challenging and picturesque.

The course has been defined to head north of Phuket island utlising roads that are safe and in many places very quiet.

For those racing, the Tour de Phuket kicks off with an Individual Time Trial on the Friday afternoon.

On Saturday both Tour and Gran Fondo riders will take on the 113km stage that heads north to the Thailand mainland.

Then, Sunday the tour will come to a finale with the challenging 86km stage that includes some tough KOM opportunities.

Stage 1 : Prolgue Individual Time TrialTour de Phuket Prologue Stage I

https://www.strava.com/clubs/42828/group_events/88183

Friday 18th March (2pm)

Distance: 5.7km

For those racing in the tour, the action kicks of with a Prologue Time Trial of 5.7km.

The prologue will start just down the road from the Thanyapura Sports Hotel so you can relax until your Peloton is called.

Each peloton can ride to the start which is 5km away. A time to check the bike and prepare the mind.

Riders will be racing against the clock on a very smooth / fast road which has some minor elevations.

The course is a simple, 5.7km straight down the road.

Once your TT is complete, you can turn left and unwind down the quiet side road, then return to watch the others or take a slow ride back to the Hotel and jump in the pool!

Please Note: Clip on TT bars and TT / Aero helmets are ok. TT Bikes and Disc Wheels are not allowed.

Stage 2 : PenultimateTour de Phuket Stage 2

https://www.strava.com/clubs/42828/group_events/88184

Saturday 19th March (7am)

Distance: 113km

This will be the longest stage of approximately 120km heading north into some very scenic Thai countryside.

While the stage does utilise the main road to head north, it is very safe with two lanes both ways and a very wide shoulder.

The northern part of the course is very quiet with a nice clockwise loop that will see the Pelotons tested.

Within the loop is the KOM points hill for the climbers in the bunch.

The stage will feature some challenging sections that will test your team work and resolve to win.

Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons.

There will be two static water stops to refull the bottles and take a break.

The finish is directly outside Thanyapura Sports Hotel with a slight uphill gradient.

Stage 3: The FinaleTour de Phuket Stage III

https://www.strava.com/clubs/42828/group_events/88185

Sunday 20th March (7am)

The Finale - Stage 3 : 86km

The 3rd stage is shorter but no less intense.

It will test rider's tired muscles and provide ample opportunities for breakaways.

We expect the race to be wide open leading into the final stage, with plenty of attacks anticipated. The stage is 90km.

There will be two KOM's for the Tour Riders.

Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons.

There will be two water stops for the Gran Fondo riders,

The finish is 200m away from Thanyapura along a very scenic tree lined road.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Tour Travel & Accommodation

Q: Can I fly in early or leave later?

A: Absolutely, your in charge of youre flights so just book what works for you, but be sure to arrive early at Thanyapura ready for your start times.

Q: How many room slots do you have at the special rate ?

A:  We have block booked a good number of rooms for early birds. If we sell through, we can always see if we can get more but the price may go up.

Q: Do I have to Stay at Thanyapura?

A:  You can stay whereever you like. Thanyapura will be the "HQ" for the weekend so it's obviously the easiest place to stay and provides great facilities for cyclists. We have also negoiated a very good room rate for the weekend. Please try to book early as there are only 100 rooms in total at Thanyapura.

Q: Do I have to twin share at Thanyapura? And can I bring Family?

A: You can most certainly book an individual room. You can also bring family / friends along for the weekend. There are limited number of family suites available. If bringing the family and would like a suite, please contact Flight Centre Active Travel.

Q: Does Thanyapura provide airport transfers within the price?

A: Yes if you are staying at Thanyapura, then two way airport transfers are available as an optional extra for $30.

Q: What facilities can I use at Thanyapura Hotel?

A: Cycosports participants can utilise all the facilities of the complex just like an ordinary guest.

Q: What time do I have to be at Thanyapura for the start of my event

A: The Tour Prologue will start at 3pm on Friday 24th March, while the Gran Fondo will start at 7am on Staurday 25th March. You should be at Thanyapura at least an hour before.

Q: Do I need travel / medical insurance to race?

A: We would strongly encourage it! If you don't have, we can help to arrange a package.

Q: Can I cancel my race booking once entered?

A: No but you can transfer it to a friend for an admin fee of $50 (race entry and accommodation)

Race Questions

Q: Do you have medics on hand in case of emergency?

A: Yes we have a full medical team stationed at the event and ambulances on standby. We will also have Singapore evac procedures defined and ready.

Q: Why did Cycosports go with race categories rather than age group categories?

A: We felt race categories give a better sporting chance for the majority. It's not a great feeling to be dropped from your age category very early in a tour.

Q: How will you ensure there are not "Sand Baggers" within race categories

A: It's always tough to police self selected categories, but we will be asking people for their Strava ID's and will review their past performances as well as community feedback. We are also looking at how we can potentially push riders up a category if they do exceptionally well in the prologue relative to the category above.

Q: Will you have the usual Cycosports Wheel and Water Bike Support?

A: Yes for all three categories of the tour. However if you are doing the Gran Fondo, you'll need to bring your own spare tube and pick up water at the two static water stops setup for each day.

Q: Once entered, can I change my race category?

A: Yes up until 14 days before the tour, you can change your race category providing slots are still available. There is no charge for changing your category, unless you are upgrading from the Gran Fondo to the Tour.

Q: Will there be race prizes?

A: Yes there will be daily prizes for the top 3 in each tour category, plus yellow jerseys for the for tour leaders to be worn on the next stage. Tour winners will receive a tour trophy at the final prize giving on Sunday. We are also looking at prizes / prize money but this will depend on whether we can garner any sponsors for these.

Q: Is there a special tour dinner on Saturday night?

A: Yes on Saturday evening Thanyapura Hotel will host a dinner for both Tour and Gran Fondo riders. The tour dinner is optional at $35 (excludes drinks).

Q: What time will everything end on Sunday?

A: We are aiming to have everyone back at the hotel and prize giving completed by 1pm.

Q: I have a question that is not covered here?

A: Great - please use the Contact Us form and we can respond.

  • Areo / TT Helmets and Clip-on TT Bars are allowed
  • TT Specific bikes and solid disc wheels are not permitted
  • If an individual produces a time that is faster than the slowest rider in the top 20% of the riders in the category above, Cycosports will have the option to review the time of the individual and discuss moving them to the category above for the entire tour, including the TTT.
  • If an individual produces a time that is slower than the fastest rider in the bottom 20% of the category below, Cycosports will have the option to review the time of the individual and discuss moving them to the category below for the entire tour, including the TTT.
  • If a participant punctures / has a genuine mechanical during the TT, they will be given the option to undertake the TT one more time.
