Tour of Phuket Stage Details

8-10th March 2019

Tour de Phuket 2019

The roads just keep getting better! We aim to update this page as we get closer to the event with news of an even more scenic Stage 3. In the meantime, the course will be a mirror of 2019.

For those racing the Three Day Tour, the race kicks off with a short but deceivingly tough Individual Time Trial on the Friday afternoon.

On Saturday both Tour and Gran Fondo riders will take on the main stage (140km) that heads north to the Thailand mainland.

Then, Sunday the tour will come to a finale with the challenging (108km) stage that includes some tough KOM opportunities.

We are extremely excited about the course and the quality of roads. Combine the scenic routes with safe pelotons and you have a fantastic weekend of cycling in Thailand.

Please Note: The final stage routes will be decided closer to the event, based on condition of the roads and any new road works. Safety is always paramount.

Stage 1 : Individual Time Trial - Prologue

Friday 6th March - 2pm

Strava Profile - Coming Soon

Distance: 4.7km

Stage1cyclepath

For those racing in the Three Day Tour, the action kicks off with a Prologue Time Trial of 4.7km.

The prologue will start at the Phuket Gateway park near the mainland bridge. The park will serve as the holding area for cyclists, providing a place to relax and watch the riders start and finish.

On the Friday riders can also collect their registration pack from 12 noon. There is no stress and no rush so even if you are a Gran Fondo rider, come down and collect your pack and watch the ITT action unfold.

Riders will be racing against the clock on a very smooth / fast road which has some minor elevations. The road is for most of the ITT course, a dedicated cycling path, increasing safety and providing a great riding surface.

The course is a simple, 4.7km loop with a couple of technical turns at the start and finish and a punchy little hill before the finish.

In past years some riders have asked whether 4.7km is enough? After they have ridden the course they have all said that it was twice as tough with the deceptive inclines and sea breeze.

While the ITT is in progress we will have a TV screen updating the results for all to see their placings.

Once your ITT is complete, you relax, unwind and watch others compete, or simply return to your hotel in your own time.

There is off-road parking for those coming by car, but extreme caution must be exercised as cyclists are warming up / racing.

Stage 2 : Phang Nga Beauty

Saturday 7th March (7:30am)

Distance: 141km,

Strava Profile - Coming Soon

Tour of Phuket 2018

This will be the longest stage of approximately 142km heading north into some very scenic Thai countryside.

While the stage does utilise the main road for a fraction of the race, it is very safe with two lanes both ways and a very wide shoulder.

The northern part of the course follows the coast and then heads inland where the undulations will start to test the legs. At around 70km the stage's KOM will be fought, before riders head south again through beautiful country side. Further hills await which may prove to be a key breakaway spot.

After a short stint on the main road again, the route will drop down to a quieter road and the ultimate finish line.

The stage will feature some challenging sections that will test your teamwork and resolve to win.

Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons. There will be two static water stops to refill the bottles and take a break. Tired Gran Fondo riders can skip the loop at the top of the stage if they wish and will be tagged as completing the shorter course.

Stage 3: The Finale

Sunday 8th March - 7:30am

Double Phang Nga Peninsula Loop - 108km

Strava Profile - Coming Soon

Tour of Phuket Stage 3

The 3rd stage brings back the iconic route of 2017. The roads have been improved and with the exception of 200m which we will marshal, is a fantastic road with outlooks over Phang Nga bay.

The course will test rider's tired muscles and provide ample opportunities for breakaways.

We expect the race to be wide open leading into the final stage, with plenty of attacks anticipated. There will be two KOM's for the Tour Riders.

Gran Fondo riders will head out on the same course following the race pelotons.

There will be two water stops for the Gran Fondo riders. Tired GF riders can decide to do one lap if they wish.

Family
The Tour of Phuket is one of the best tours on the calendar for bringing the family, spouse or friends. As well as beautiful beaches, delicious food and inviting accommodation options, Phuket Island and Phang Nga have untold attractions for the family while you are cycling. Here are a few ideas:

Mai Khao Beach

Enjoy Mai Khao Beach

This 11km-long straight beach is still blessedly undeveloped as it is part of the Sirinat National Park. The sand of Mai Khao Beach - the name of which translates as "white wood" - is possibly the coarsest of any on Phuket, but is also practically deserted a lot of the time, making it possible to walk for kilometres without seeing a single other person.

Zip Lining

Hanuman Zip lining

Choose from 3 different zip line courses and zip through the jungle canopy. Enjoy the skybridges and spiral stairways that give amazing views of the surrounding jungle and the island. The experience includes safety orientation and riding tips to ensure safety for all the family.

jamesbond

James Bond Island

Head to the iconic James Bond island located in Phang Nga Bay and go snorkeling or just relax and enjoy a seafood lunch at a floating village. Kayaking options are also available around the amazing limestone cliffs of the bay.

Massage

Thai Traditional Massage

Enjoy a traditional massage at the fraction of the cost in other countries. Across Phuket you can select a very traditional massage or opt for a high end spa. Either way you will be pampered and rejuvenated.

KohPhiPhi

Snorkeling at Koh Phi Phi

Head to the beautiful and pristine islands of Koh Phi Phi by speed boat. View the natural pools at Pileh Lagoon, relax on the golden sandy beaches taking a break from the beautiful snorkeling of the area. You can also check out the limestone rocks of Loh Samah and Maya Bay.

OldPhuket

Phuket Old Town

Take a guided food tour of Phuket Old Town or just wonder around and enjoy the sights, sounds and great tastes of Thai cuisine from road side stalls, trendy cafes and famous restaurants. Explore the many streets with their old world “shophouse” charm and interesting shops. If you staying after the race, enjoy the Sunday night walking markets – truly a memorable experience.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Tour Travel & Accommodation

Q: Can I fly in early or leave later?

A: Absolutely! You are in charge of your flights so just book what works for you, but be sure to arrive early at the Phuket Gateway ready for your start times.

Q: Where should I Stay?

A:  The simple answer is "wherever you like" but try to select a hotel at the northern end of Phuket or southern end of Phang Nga as the stage starts and finishes are at Phuket Gateway (Stage 1) and at the Football Fields (Stage 2&3) on the northern side of the Sarisin Bridge.

Q: Why is there no "Tour Hotel" this year?

A:  Most hotels do not want to be completely booked out by cyclists only staying 2 nights. By not having a tour hotel, participants are free to select the accommodation that suits their budget, location and style preferences.

Q: Can I bring Family?

A: Yes of course - that's why we recommend selecting your own accommodation. We will recommend family friendly hotels on the accommodation page also.

Q: Are you arranging airport transfers?

A: No - please arrange these with your hotel or hire a car.

Q: What time do I have to be at the Phuket Gateway for the start of my event?

A: The Tour Prologue will start at 2 pm on Friday 6th March, while the Gran Fondo will start at 8 am on Saturday 7th March. You should be at the Phuket Gateway (ready to ride out) at least an hour before.

Q: Do I need travel / medical insurance to race?

A: We would strongly encourage it!

Q: Can I cancel my race booking once entered?

A: No but you can transfer it to a friend for an admin fee of SG $50 (race entry only) before the 1st of March 2020.

Race Questions

Q: Do I need an UCI licence to compete?

A: No this is not a UCI event.

Q: Do you have medics on hand in case of emergency?

A: Yes we have a full medical team stationed at the event and ambulances on standby.

Q: Why did Cycosports go with age group categories?

A: To align the event with cycling federations, age groups are required. We do however provide a competitive sporting category with the 2 x one day Classic Races of stage 2 and 3 which have full peloton support and rankings / prizes. For those looking for a relaxed / fun weekend, we have the two-day Gran Fondo Sportif and the two-day classic races.

Q: Will you have the usual Cycosports Wheel and Water Bike Support?

A: Yes for all three categories of the tour. However if you are doing the Gran Fondo, you'll need to bring your own spare tube and pick up water at the two static water stops setup for each day.

Q: Once entered, can I change my race category?

A: Yes up until 1 March you can change your race category providing slots are still available. There is no charge for changing your category unless you are upgrading from the Two Day Race or the Gran Fondo to the Three Stage Tour.

Q: What time will everything end on Sunday?

A: We will have prize giving finished by 1pm if you need to make a dash to the airport. However we are looking at throwing a ‘closing party’ so you may want to look at later flights!

Q: I have a question that is not covered here?

A: Great - please use the Contact Us form and we can respond.

* Required Fields

Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)

Please read the questions carefully and answer honestly.

Yes/No

1.    Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition and that you should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor?

Yes/No

2.    Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?

Yes/No

3.    In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing physical activity?

Yes/No

4.    Do you lose your balance because of dizziness or do you ever lose consciousness?

Yes/No

5.    Do you have a bone or joint problem (for example, back, knee or hip) that could be made worse by a change in your physical activity?

Yes/No

6.    Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs (for example, water pills) for your blood pressure or heart condition?

Yes/No

7.    Do you know of any other reason why you should not do physical activity?

Yes/No

If you answered YES to one or more questions:

Consult your doctor by phone or in person BEFORE you start becoming much more physically active or BEFORE you have a fitness appraisal. Tell your doctor about the PAR-Q and which question you answered YES.

  • You may be able to do an activity you want – as long as you start slow and build up gradually. Or you may need to restrict your activities to those which are safe for you. Consults your doctor about the kinds of activities you wish to participate in and follow his/her advice.
  • Find out which community programmes are safe and helpful for you.

If you answered NO honestly to all PAR-Q questions, you can be reasonably sure to:

  • Start becoming much more physically active. Starting slowly and building up gradually is the safest and easiest way to go.
  • Take part in a fitness appraisal. This is excellent for determining your basic fitness so as to plan the best way to live actively. Evaluating your blood pressure is also strongly recommended. For readings above 144/94, consult your doctor before you become more physically active.

Delay becoming much more active:

  • If you are not feeling well because of a temporary illness such as a cold or a fever – wait until you feel better, or
  • If you are or may be pregnant – consult your doctor before you start becoming more active.
